Drawing and Ironing in the Bodymaker

The draw and iron process inside the Bodymaker is a critical phase in shaping aluminum cans. This video outlines the technical steps involved in this process.

Drawing is responsible for shaping the metal. Ironing then follows, thinning the can walls while increasing the height.

Before the Bodymaker, the cup is initially drawn in the Cupper. In the Bodymaker, the cup is drawn again, a process referred to as "redraw." This step is necessary for achieving the required dimensions of the can.

To prevent wrinkling during the process, the cup is clamped to stabilize the metal.

In the ironing phase, the can’s walls are thinned and elongated. The application of force is crucial—too much can tear the can, while too little results in a can that is too short.

The process concludes when the can contacts the domer, which shapes the bottom of the can.
