Bodymaker Progression: Transforming a Cup into a Can
This short video demonstrates the progression inside the Bodymaker, where various metal forming operations turn a cup into a straight-walled can.
The video shows each stage of the cup’s transformation into a can, highlighting the tools involved in each step.
The first metal forming step occurs when the Bodymaker Punch forces the cup through the Redraw Die, shaping it into the basic form of a can.
Next, the Punch continues forward, pushing the can through a series of Ironing Dies. These three steps progressively thin the can’s walls, increasing its height with each pass.
At the end of the Bodymaker stroke, the Punch contacts the Bottom Former (or "Domer"), which forms the dome at the bottom of the can, completing the transformation.
