Coil Handling
In this video, we're going to talk about coil handling, a crucial step in the can-making process.
Overview of Coil Handling Equipment
The coil handling equipment is always located close to the cupper, as its primary job is to move the aluminum coil into position for feeding into the cupper and initiating the can-making process.
Loading the Coil
The first step involves placing the aluminum coil onto the upender. In this video, a forklift is used for this task, although some plants may employ a hoist. Once the coil is on the upender, it is slid into position so that, when tilted, the coil will land on the coil car.
Upender Operation
After positioning, the upender tilts the coil ninety degrees. In this video, the process is sped up to illustrate the action; however, in practice, it is a slow and careful operation, as safety is a top priority.
Coil Car Movement
Once the coil is on the coil car, it rotates ninety degrees before sliding into position near the uncoiler. As it approaches the uncoiler, the coil car elevates to align the center of the aluminum coil with the center of the mandrel.
Feeding the Coil
The next step is to slowly feed the coil onto the mandrel. Once the coil is properly loaded and seated, the coil change team rotates the uncoiler, moving the old coil out of position and bringing the new coil into place.
Starting Production
With the new coil in position, it can now be fed into the cupper. At this point, production can commence, and the process of making cans begins anew.
