Slow Motion Inside the Trimmer
The Trimmer is an important machine in the 2-piece aluminum can manufacturing process, responsible for cutting the straight-walled can’s jagged (top) edge. This step follows the Bodymaker process, where the Cup is drawn and ironed into a straight-walled can, leaving an uneven upper edge that must be removed.
In this slow-motion video, we take a look at two parts of the trimming process:
In this slow-motion video, we take a look at two parts of the trimming process:
1. Trimmer Knives Shearing the Top Edge
After the Bodymaker process, the can's top edge is irregular and must be removed for accuracy. The Trimmer Knives shear off this jagged edge as they rotate, leaving a smooth and uniform top edge.
2. Removal of the Trim Ring
Once the top edge is cut, the excess aluminum, known as the Trim Ring, is separated from the can body and extracted through a vacuum chute. The vacuum system transports these Trim Rings through ducting to the Baler room, where they are collected and baled for recycling.
