Necker Modules: Flanger, Base Reformer and Light Tester

This video provides an overview of the auxiliary modules inside the Necker, focusing on additional processes that enhance the can’s structure and quality.

The Flanger is responsible for curling the can’s top edge, which will later form a double-seam with the lid (or end) of the can at the filler, after the beverage has been added. The Flanger Head rotates with spin rollers to form the flange, while the Push Ram moves the can into position. Once the can reaches its finished height, the Push Ram reverses, and air is used to release the can by its dome, allowing it to transfer to the next turret.

When thinner gauge aluminum is used, cans undergo an additional step after flanging, advancing to the base reformer. The base reformer adjusts the profile of the dome, adding strength and improving resistance to dome reversal when the can is pressurized.

Throughout these processes, the Push Ram utilizes vacuum pressure to securely hold cans during transfer and reforming.

Some Neckers are also equipped with a Light Tester, designed to detect cracks or tiny holes (pinholes) in the cans. The Light Tester shines light on the outside of the can, while a sensor inside detects any light that passes through a defect.
