Purpose and Functionality of the Can Washer

The can washer plays a crucial role in the manufacturing process by thoroughly cleaning cans to eliminate contaminants and lubricants left by the body maker. This essential step prepares the can surfaces for both exterior and interior coatings, ensuring optimal adhesion and durability of the final product.

Cleaning and Coating Process

After the initial cleaning, the washer applies a specialized coating to the surfaces of the cans. This coating enhances the adhesion of the exterior decoration and internal coating, thereby improving the overall quality of the finished cans.

Conveyor System

The washer utilizes an open mesh conveyor mat, constructed from either stainless flat wire or PVDF flush grid. This design prevents any obstruction during the cleaning and rinsing processes. Cans are conveyed through the washer in an inverted position, with the dome end facing up.

Can Guides

To maintain stability and ensure a uniform pack as the cans travel through the machine, can guides run along each side of the conveyor mat. These guides help to create an organized flow of cans through the various stages of the cleaning process.

Multi-Stage Cleaning Process

As the cans enter the infeed section of the washer and begin to form a pack, they progress through multiple cleaning stages. Each stage is equipped with specifically selected chemicals, tanks, pumps, spray bars, risers, and nozzles. Together, these components work in harmony to clean, etch, rinse, and, in certain applications, coat or treat the cans.

Variability in Washing Stages

The number of washing stages may vary depending on the specific washer and the type of product being processed. However, despite this variability, the primary function of each stage remains consistent: to ensure that cans are thoroughly cleaned and prepared for further processing.

By maintaining a rigorous washing protocol, the can washer contributes significantly to the overall efficiency and quality of the can manufacturing process, ultimately supporting the production of high-quality, reliable products.
