How Does a Scrap System Work?
This video, created in collaboration with integratedAIR Systems, provides an in-depth look at the Scrap System in a can manufacturing plant, which processes aluminum scrap from the Cupper and Trimmer.
Types of Scrap Processed
The Scrap System handles two primary types of aluminum scrap:
- Web Scrap: This is the leftover web of aluminum at the Cupper after cups are formed.
- Trim Rings: These are the jagged top edges cut from cans in the Trimmer.
How the Scrap System Works
1) Scrap Collection via Vacuum Ducting: A powerful vacuum system pulls web scrap from the Cupper and Trim Rings from the Trimmer through ducting, directing them toward the Scrap System.
2) Oil Separator: For Trimmer scrap, the ducting includes an oil separator to remove any coolant from the scrap stream, preventing contamination in the baling process.
3) Scrap Transport to the Baler Room: The scrap is transported through the ducting and enters the Baler Room on the upper level.
4) Scrap Chopper: Inside the Baler Room, a Scrap Chopper mangles and reduces the size of the scrap, making it easier to process.
5) Air Separator and Weight Hopper: The Air Separator separates the scrap from the airstream, allowing the aluminum to fall into the Weight Hopper. The Weight Hopper collects scrap until it reaches a pre-set weight.
6) Baling Process: Once the Weight Hopper is full, the scrap is released into the Baler, which compresses it into dense aluminum bales.
7) Palletizing and Recycling: The bales are then palletized and prepared for transport to a recycling facility.
